1 Woe unto them that decree iniquitous decrees, and to the writers that prescribe oppression, 2 to turn away the poor from judgment, and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people; that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! 3 And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the sudden destruction which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help, and where will ye leave your glory? 4 They can but crouch under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

5 Ah! the Assyrian! the rod of mine anger! and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. 6 I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge; to take the spoil, and to seize the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 But he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; for it is in his heart to extirpate and cut off nations not a few. 8 For he saith, Are not my princes all kings? 9 Is not Calno as Karkemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus? 10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, — and their graven images exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria, 11 — shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her images? 12 And it shall come to pass, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and upon Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stoutness of heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. 13 For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am intelligent; and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and, like a valiant man, I have brought down them that sit on thrones; 14 and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples, and as one gathereth forsaken eggs, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped. 15 — Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? As if the rod should wield them that lift it up; as if the staff should lift up him who is not wood! 16 Therefore shall the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness, and under his glory he shall kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire: 17 and the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briars in one day, 18 and it shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a sick man fainteth. 19 And the remainder of the trees of his forest shall be few: yea, a child might write them.

20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob shall no more again rely upon him that smote them; but they shall rely upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty ·God*GodHebrew: El22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return: the consumption determined shall overflow in righteousness. 23 For a consumption, and one determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, accomplish in the midst of all the land.

24 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt: 25 for yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their destruction. 26 And Jehovah of hosts will stir up a scourge against him, according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and his rod shall be upon the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt. 27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck; and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. ... 28 He is come to Aiath, he hath passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage. 29 They are gone through the pass; they make their lodging at Geba: Ramah trembleth, Gibeah of Saul is fled. 30 Lift up thy voice, daughter of Gallim! Hearken, O Laish! — Poor Anathoth! 31 Madmenah is fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim take to flight. 32 Still a day of halting at Nob; he shaketh his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. ... 33 Behold the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, shall lop the boughs with violence; and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be brought low; 34 and he shall make clearings in the thickets of the forest with iron; and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

La cine veți fugi după ajutor și unde vă veți lăsa bogăția?" 4 Unii vor fi îngenuncheați între cei prinși în război, iar alții vor cădea între cei morți. Cu*Cap. 5:25;9:12,17,21. toate acestea, mânia Lui nu se potolește și mâna Lui tot întinsă este.

5 „Vai de asirian", zice Domnul, „nuiaua mâniei Mele, care poartă în mână toiagul*Ier. 51:20. urgiei Mele! 6 I-am dat drumul împotriva unui neam*Cap. 9:17. nelegiuit, l-am trimis*Ier. 34:22. împotriva unui popor pe care sunt mâniat, ca să-l prădeze și să-l jefuiască, să-l calce în picioare ca noroiul de pe ulițe. 7 Dar*Gen. 50:20.Mica 4:12. el nu judecă așa și nu acesta este gândul inimii lui, ci el nu se gândește decât să nimicească, decât să prăpădească neamurile cu grămada. 8 Căci*2 Împ. 18:24;19:10. el zice: ‘Nu sunt voievozii mei tot atâția împărați? 9 Nu s-a întâmplat cu Calno*Amos 6:2. la fel ca*2 Cron. 35:20. și cu Carchemișul? Nu s-a întâmplat cu Hamatul ca și cu Arpadul? Nu s-a întâmplat Samariei la fel ca*2 Împ. 16:9. Damascului? 10 După cum mâna mea a pus stăpânire pe împărățiile idolilor (unde erau mai multe icoane decât la Ierusalim și în Samaria), 11 cum am făcut Samariei și idolilor ei, nu voi face și Ierusalimului și icoanelor lui?’" 12 Dar, după ce Domnul Își va împlini toată lucrarea pe*2 Împ. 19:31. muntele Sionului și la Ierusalim, „voi*Ier. 50:18. pedepsi", zice Domnul, „pe împăratul Asiriei pentru rodul inimii lui îngâmfate și pentru trufia privirilor lui semețe, 13 căci*Cap. 37:24.Ezec. 28:4.Dan. 4:30. el a zis: ‘Prin puterea mâinii mele am făcut aceste lucruri și prin înțelepciunea mea, căci sunt priceput; am împins înapoi hotarele popoarelor și le-am jefuit vistieriile și, ca un viteaz, am dat jos pe cei ce ședeau pe scaunele lor de domnie; 14 am pus mâna*Iov 31:25. pe bogățiile popoarelor ca pe un cuib și, cum se strâng niște ouă părăsite, așa am strâns eu tot pământul: niciunul n-a mișcat vreo aripă, nici n-a deschis ciocul ca să ciripească.’ 15 Se fălește*Ier. 51:20. oare securea împotriva celui ce se slujește de ea? Sau se mândrește fierăstrăul față de cel ce-l mânuiește? Ca și cum nuiaua ar mișca pe cel ce o ridică, parcă toiagul ar ridica pe cel ce nu este de lemn!" 16 De aceea Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor va trimite ofilirea prin războinicii*Cap. 5:17. lui cei voinici și între aleșii lui va izbucni un pârjol, ca pârjolul unui foc. 17 Lumina lui Israel se va preface în foc și Sfântul lui, într-o flacără care*Cap. 9:18;27:4. va mistui și va arde spinii și mărăcinii lui într-o zi. 18 Va arde, trup și suflet, strălucirea pădurii și a câmpiilor*2 Împ. 19:23. lui, de va fi ca un bolnav care cade în leșin. 19 Ceilalți copaci din pădurea lui vor putea fi numărați și un copil le-ar putea scrie numărul. 20 În ziua aceea, rămășița lui Israel și cei scăpați din casa lui Iacov nu*2 Împ. 16:7.2 Cron. 28:20. se vor mai sprijini pe cel ce îi lovea, ci se vor sprijini cu încredere pe Domnul, Sfântul lui Israel. 21 O rămășiță*Cap. 7:3., rămășița lui Iacov, se va întoarce la Dumnezeul cel puternic. 22 Chiar*Rom. 9:27. dacă poporul tău, Israele, ar fi ca nisipul mării, totuși numai*Cap. 6:13. o rămășiță se va întoarce, căci nimicirea*Cap. 28:22. este hotărâtă, făcând să se reverse dreptatea. 23 Și*Cap. 28:22.Dan. 9:27.Rom. 9:28. nimicirea aceasta, care a fost hotărâtă, Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor o va aduce la îndeplinire în toată țara. 24 Totuși, așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor: „Poporul Meu care locuiești în Sion, nu*Cap. 37:6. te teme de asirian; da, el te lovește cu nuiaua și își ridică toiagul asupra ta, cum făceau egiptenii*Exod 14:1.. 25 Dar*Cap. 54:7., peste puțină vreme, pedeapsa*Dan. 11:36. va înceta și mânia Mea se va întoarce împotriva lui, ca să-l nimicească." 26 Domnul oștirilor va învârti biciul*2 Împ. 19:35. împotriva lui, cum a lovit pe Madian*Jud. 7:25. Cap. 9:4. la stânca Oreb, și Își va mai ridica toiagul*Exod 14:26,27. o dată asupra mării, ca odinioară în Egipt. 27 În ziua aceea, se*Cap. 14:25. va lua povara lui de pe umărul tău și jugul lui de pe gâtul tău, ba încă jugul va crăpa de grăsime*Ps. 105:15.Dan. 9:24.1 Ioan 2:20.. 28 El vine asupra Aiatului, străbate Migronul, își lasă calabalâcul la Micmaș. 29 Trec trecătoarea*1 Sam. 13:23., se culcă la Gheba*1 Sam. 11:4.; Rama tremură, Ghibea lui Saul o ia la fugă. 30 Ridică-ți glasul, fiica*1 Sam. 25:44. Galimului! Ia seama, Lais*Jud. 18:7.! Vai*Ios. 21:18. de tine, Anatot! 31 Madmena*Ios. 15:31. se împrăștie, locuitorii din Ghebim fug. 32 Încă o zi de oprire la*1 Sam. 21:1;22:19.Neem. 11:32. Nob, și amenință*Cap. 13:2. cu mâna lui muntele fiicei*Cap. 37:22. Sionului, dealul Ierusalimului. 33 Iată, Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor taie crăcile cu putere; cei*Amos 2:9. mai mari sunt tăiați, cei mai înalți sunt doborâți. 34 Dă jos cu fierul crângul pădurii și Libanul cade sub mâna Celui Puternic.
