1 Ó meu povo, ouça minhas instruções!

Abra os ouvidos para o que direi,

2 pois lhe falarei por meio de parábola.

Ensinarei enigmas de nosso passado,

3 histórias que ouvimos e conhecemos,

que nossos antepassados nos transmitiram.

4 Não esconderemos essas verdades de nossos filhos;

contaremos à geração seguinte

os feitos gloriosos do Senhor,

seu poder e suas maravilhas.

5 Pois ele estabeleceu seus preceitos a Jacó,

deu sua lei a Israel.

Ordenou a nossos antepassados

que a ensinassem a seus filhos,

6 para que a geração seguinte, os filhos ainda por nascer,

a conhecesse,

e eles, por sua vez, a ensinarão a seus filhos.

7 Portanto, cada geração deve pôr sua esperança em Deus,

não esquecer seus poderosos feitos

e obedecer a seus mandamentos.

8 Assim, não serão como seus antepassados,

teimosos, rebeldes e infiéis,

que se recusaram a confiar em Deus de todo o coração.

9 Os guerreiros de Efraim, embora armados de arcos,

deram meia-volta e fugiram no dia da batalha.

10 Não cumpriram a aliança de Deus,

não quiseram viver de acordo com sua lei.

11 Esqueceram o que ele havia feito,

as maravilhas que lhes tinha mostrado,

12 os milagres que realizara para seus antepassados

na planície de Zoã, na terra do Egito.

13 Pois ele dividiu o mar e os conduziu na travessia;

fez as águas se erguerem como muralhas.

14 Durante o dia, os guiava com uma nuvem,

durante a noite, com a luz do fogo.

15 No deserto, partiu as rochas para lhes dar água,

como a que jorra de um manancial.

16 Da pedra, fez brotar riachos

e correr água como um rio.

17 Ainda assim, continuaram a pecar contra ele

e se rebelaram contra o Altíssimo no deserto.

18 Puseram Deus à prova em seu coração

e exigiram a comida que tanto queriam.

19 Chegaram a falar contra o próprio Deus, dizendo:

"Deus não é capaz de nos dar comida no deserto.

20 Sim, ele pode bater numa rocha e dela fazer brotar água,

mas não é capaz de dar pão e carne a seu povo".

21 Quando o Senhor os ouviu, se enfureceu;

o fogo de sua ira ardeu contra Jacó.

Sim, sua ira se levantou contra Israel,

22 pois não creram em Deus

nem confiaram em seu cuidado.

23 Apesar disso, ele deu ordem às nuvens;

abriu as portas dos céus.

24 Fez chover maná para alimentá-los;

deu-lhes pão dos céus.

25 Eles comeram o pão dos anjos;

receberam comida à vontade.

26 Ele enviou dos céus o vento do leste

e, por seu poder, guiou o vento do sul.

27 Fez chover carne como se fosse pó,

muitas e muitas aves, como a areia da praia.

28 Fez as aves caírem dentro do acampamento,

ao redor de suas tendas.

29 O povo comeu à vontade;

ele atendeu ao desejo deles.

30 Mas, antes que estivessem satisfeitos,

enquanto ainda tinham comida na boca,

31 a ira de Deus se levantou contra eles.

Ele matou seus homens mais fortes;

feriu mortalmente os jovens de Israel.

32 Ainda assim, continuaram a pecar;

não confiaram em Deus, apesar de suas maravilhas.

33 Por isso, reduziu a vida deles a um sopro

e fez seus dias terminarem em terror.

34 Quando Deus começou a matá-los,

finalmente o buscaram;

arrependeram-se e levaram Deus a sério.

35 Então lembraram que Deus era sua rocha,

que o Deus Altíssimo*78.35 Em hebraico, El-Elyon. era seu redentor.

36 Contudo, foi só da boca para fora;

mentiram para ele com os lábios.

37 Pois o coração não era leal a Deus;

não foram fiéis à sua aliança.

38 E, no entanto, ele foi misericordioso;

perdoou seus pecados e não os destruiu.

Muitas vezes conteve sua ira

e não se enfureceu contra eles.

39 Pois se lembrou de que eram simples mortais;

passam como o vento, que não volta mais.

40 Quantas vezes se rebelaram contra ele no deserto

e o entristeceram naquela terra desolada!

41 Repetidamente, puseram Deus à prova

e provocaram o Santo de Israel.

42 Não se recordaram do seu poder,

nem do dia em que ele os resgatou de seus inimigos.

43 Não se lembraram dos sinais que ele fizera no Egito,

das maravilhas realizadas na planície de Zoã.

44 Ele transformou os rios em sangue,

para que ninguém bebesse de suas águas.

45 Enviou enxames de moscas para devorá-los

e rãs para destruí-los.

46 Entregou suas plantações às lagartas

e suas colheitas, aos gafanhotos.

47 Destruiu as videiras com granizo

e as figueiras, com geadas.

48 Entregou seu gado à chuva de pedras

e seus rebanhos, aos raios.

49 Lançou sobre eles sua ira ardente,

sua fúria, indignação e hostilidade.

Enviou contra eles

muitos anjos destruidores.

50 Voltou sua ira contra eles;

não lhes poupou a vida,

mas os devastou com a peste.

51 Matou todos os filhos mais velhos do Egito,

a flor da juventude na terra de Cam.

52 Mas conduziu seu povo como um rebanho de ovelhas

e os guiou em segurança pelo deserto.

53 Manteve-os a salvo, e não tiveram medo;

o mar cobriu seus inimigos.

54 Levou o povo até a fronteira de sua terra santa,

à região montanhosa que para eles conquistou.

55 Diante deles expulsou as nações

e repartiu entre eles sua herança;

estabeleceu as tribos de Israel em seus lugares.

56 Ainda assim, continuaram a pôr à prova o Deus Altíssimo

e a se rebelar contra ele;

não obedeceram a seus preceitos.

57 Voltaram atrás e foram infiéis, como seus antepassados;

mostraram-se indignos de confiança, como um arco defeituoso.

58 Provocaram a ira de Deus ao construir altares para outros deuses;

com seus ídolos, despertaram nele ciúmes.

59 Quando Deus os ouviu, se enfureceu

e rejeitou por completo Israel.

60 Abandonou sua habitação em Siló,

o tabernáculo onde vivia no meio do povo.

61 Deixou que a arca de seu poder fosse capturada,

entregou sua glória nas mãos de inimigos.

62 Permitiu que seu povo fosse morto à espada,

pois se enfureceu com eles, sua propriedade.

63 Os jovens foram consumidos pelo fogo,

e as moças não puderam entoar canções de núpcias.

64 Os sacerdotes foram mortos à espada,

e as viúvas não puderam lamentar as mortes.

65 Então o Senhor se levantou, como de um sono,

como o guerreiro que desperta da embriaguez.

66 Fez os inimigos recuarem

e os entregou à vergonha para sempre.

67 Rejeitou, porém, os descendentes de José;

não escolheu a tribo de Efraim.

68 Antes, escolheu a tribo de Judá,

o monte Sião, que ele amou.

69 Ali construiu seu santuário, alto como os céus,

firme e duradouro como a terra.

70 Escolheu Davi, seu servo,

e dos currais o chamou.

71 Tirou-o do pastoreio de ovelhas e cordeiros

e tornou-o pastor dos descendentes de Jacó,

o povo que a Deus pertence, Israel.

72 Com coração sincero, Davi cuidou deles

e os conduziu com sensatez.

2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.*78.8 that…: Heb. that prepared not their heart

9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.*78.9 carrying: Heb. throwing forth

10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?*78.19 furnish: Heb. order

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

25 Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.*78.25 Man…: or, Every one did eat the bread of the mighty

26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.*78.26 to blow: Heb. to go

27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:*78.27 feathered…: Heb. fowl of wing

28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.*78.31 smote…: Heb. made to bow*78.31 chosen…: or, young men

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.

35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!*78.40 provoke: or, rebel against

41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.*78.42 from…: or, from affliction

43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:*78.43 wrought: Heb. set

44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.*78.47 destroyed: Heb. killed*78.47 frost: or, great hailstones

48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.*78.48 gave…: Heb. shut up*78.48 hot…: or, lightnings

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;*78.50 He made…: Heb. He weighed a path*78.50 life…: or, beasts to the murrain

51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.*78.53 overwhelmed: Heb. covered

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.

62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.*78.63 given…: Heb. praised

64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.*78.69 established: Heb. founded

70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.*78.71 following: Heb. after

72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
