Salmos 49

Para o mestre de música. Salmo dos coraítas.

1 Ouçam isto vocês, todos os povos;

escutem, todos os que vivem neste mundo —

2 gente do povo, homens importantes,

ricos e pobres igualmente:

3 A minha boca falará com sabedoria;

a meditação do meu coração trará entendimento.

4 Inclinarei os meus ouvidos a um provérbio;

com a harpa exporei o meu enigma:

5 Por que deverei temer, quando vierem dias maus,

quando inimigos traiçoeiros me cercarem,

6 aqueles que confiam nos seus bens

e se gabam das suas muitas riquezas?

7 Ninguém pode redimir o seu semelhante

ou pagar a Deus o preço por ele,

8 pois o resgate de uma vida não tem preço.

Não há pagamento que o livre

9 para que viva para sempre

e não sofra decomposição.

10 Pois todos podem ver que os sábios morrem,

como perecem o tolo e o estúpido,

e para outros deixam os seus bens.

11 O túmulo será a morada deles para sempre,*49.11 Conforme a Septuaginta e a Versão Siríaca. O Texto Massorético traz Em seus pensamentos a casa deles será perpétua.

a sua habitação de geração a geração,

ainda que tenham*49.11 Ou pois eles têm. dado o próprio nome a terras.

12 Mesmo que muito importante,

o ser humano não perdura;

é como os animais, que perecem.

13 Este é o destino dos que confiam em si mesmos,

e dos seus seguidores, que aprovam o que eles dizem. Pausa

14 Como ovelhas, são conduzidos à sepultura,*49.14 Hebraico: Sheol. Essa palavra também pode ser traduzida por profundezas ou morte; também no final desse versículo e no versículo 15.

e a morte os apascentará.

Pela manhã os justos triunfarão sobre eles!

A aparência deles se desfará na sepultura,

longe das suas gloriosas mansões.

15 Deus, porém, redimirá a minha vida da sepultura

e me levará para si. Pausa

16 Não fique receoso quando alguém se enriquece

e aumenta o luxo da sua casa,

17 pois nada levará consigo quando morrer;

não descerá com ele o seu esplendor.

18 Embora em vida ele se parabenize:

"Todos o elogiam, pois você está prosperando",

19 ele se juntará aos seus antepassados,

que nunca mais verão a luz.

20 O homem, mesmo que muito importante, não tem entendimento;

é como os animais, que perecem.

1 Hear this, all you peoples;

listen, all who live in this world,

2 both low and high,

rich and poor alike:

3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom;

the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.

4 I will turn my ear to a proverb;

with the harp I will expound my riddle:

5 Why should I fear when evil days come,

when wicked deceivers surround me—

6 those who trust in their wealth

and boast of their great riches?

7 No one can redeem the life of another

or give to God a ransom for them—

8 the ransom for a life is costly,

no payment is ever enough—

9 so that they should live on forever

and not see decay.

10 For all can see that the wise die,

that the foolish and the senseless also perish,

leaving their wealth to others.

11 Their tombs will remain their houses*49:11 Septuagint and Syriac; Hebrew In their thoughts their houses will remain forever,

their dwellings for endless generations,

though they had*49:11 Or generations, / for they have named lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;

they are like the beasts that perish.

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,

and of their followers, who approve their sayings.*49:13 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 15.

14 They are like sheep and are destined to die;

death will be their shepherd

(but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).

Their forms will decay in the grave,

far from their princely mansions.

15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;

he will surely take me to himself.

16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,

when the splendor of their houses increases;

17 for they will take nothing with them when they die,

their splendor will not descend with them.

18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—

and people praise you when you prosper—

19 they will join those who have gone before them,

who will never again see the light of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding

are like the beasts that perish.
