O antigo amor e a atual apostasia do povo

1 Veio a mim *Jr 1.2,11a palavra de Jeová, dizendo: 2 Vai e *Jr 7.2;11.6;Is 58.1clama aos ouvidos de Jerusalém: Assim diz Jeová: A favor de ti lembro-me da *Ez 16.8beneficência da tua mocidade, do amor dos teus desposórios, de como me *Jr 2.6;Dt 2.7;Is 63.7-14seguiste no deserto, numa terra que não estava semeada. 3 Israel era *Êx 19.5-6;Dt 7.6;14.2santidade para Jeová, primícias da sua novidade; *Jr 30.16;50.7;Is 41.11todos os que o devoram serão tidos por culpados; sobre eles virá o mal, diz Jeová.

4 Ouvi a palavra de Jeová, ó casa de Jacó e todas as famílias da casa de Israel. 5 Assim diz Jeová: *Is 5.4;Mq 6.3Que injustiça acharam em mim vossos pais, visto que se alongaram de mim, e foram após a *Jr 8.19;2Rs 17.15vaidade, e se tornaram vãos? 6 Eles não disseram: Onde está Jeová, que *Êx 20.2;Is 63.11;Os 13.4nos fez subir da terra do Egito e que *Dt 8.15;32.10nos conduziu pelo deserto, por uma terra de ermos e de covas, por uma terra de fome e de escuridão, por uma terra pela qual ninguém passava? 7 Eu vos introduzi *Dt 8.7-9;11.10-12numa terra de jardins, para que comêsseis os seus frutos e o seu bem; mas, quando entrastes, *Jr 3.2;16.18;Sl 106.38profanastes a minha terra e fizestes a minha herança uma abominação. 8 Os *Jr 10.21sacerdotes não disseram: Onde está Jeová? E os que tratavam da lei *Jr 4.22;Ml 2.6-7não me conheceram; também os regentes prevaricaram contra mim, e os *Jr 23.13profetas profetizaram em nome de Baal e andaram após o que *Jr 16.19;Hc 2.18de nada aproveita.

9 Pelo que ainda *Jr 2.35;Ez 20.35-36contenderei convosco, diz Jeová, e contenderei com os, filhos de vossos filhos. 10 Pois *Is 23.12passai às ilhas de *Gn 10.4;Nm 24.24Quitim e vede; mandai a *Jr 49.28;Sl 120.5;Is 21.16Quedar e considerai bem; vede se jamais sucedeu coisa semelhante. 11 Acaso, trocou alguma nação os seus deuses, *Jr 5.7;16.20;Is 37.19que, contudo, não são deuses? Mas o meu povo *Sl 106.20;Rm 1.23trocou a sua glória por aquilo que de nada aproveita. 12 Pasmai, *Jr 4.23;Is 1.2céus, sobre isso, e espantai-vos, e sede sobremaneira desolados, diz Jeová. 13 Pois dois males fez o meu povo: Deixaram-me a mim, *Jr 17.13;Sl 36.9fonte de águas vivas, e cavaram para si *Jr 14.3cisternas, cisternas rotas, que não retêm as águas.

Suas apostasias sem exemplo

14 Acaso, é Israel um servo? Acaso, é ele *Jr 5.19;17.4;27.12,17um escravo nascido em casa? Porque logo veio a ser presa? 15 Sobre ele rugiram *Jr 50.17os leões novos, e levantaram a sua voz, *Jr 4.7e fizeram a terra dele uma desolação; as suas cidades estão queimadas, sem que haja quem nelas habite. 16 Também os filhos de *Jr 44.1;Is 19.13;Os 9.6Nofe e de *Jr 43.7-9;46.14Tafnes se apascentam sobre *Jr 48.45;Dt 33.20o alto da tua cabeça. 17 Porventura, *Jr 4.18não te aconteceu isso por teres deixado a Jeová, teu Deus, quando ele *Dt 32.10te guiava pelo caminho? 18 Agora, que tens tu com o caminho do *Jr 2.36;Jr 37.7;Is 30.1-2Egito, para beberes as águas de *Js 13.3;1Cr 13.5;Is 23.3Sior? Ou que tens tu com o caminho da *Jr 50.17Assíria, para beberes as águas do rio? 19 *Jr 4.18;Is 3.9;Os 5.5A tua malícia te castigará, e *Jr 3.6,8,11,14;Os 11.7as tuas apostasias te repreenderão. Sabe e vê que má e *Jó 20.11-16;Am 8.10amarga coisa é o teres deixado a Jeová, teu Deus, e *Jr 5.24;Sl 36.1o não haver em ti temor de mim, diz o Senhor, Jeová dos Exércitos.

20 Há muito que *Lv 26.13quebraste o teu jugo, e rompeste as tuas ataduras, *Jr 2.25e disseste: Não servirei. Pois sobre todo *Jr 3.2,6;17.2;Dt 12.2;Is 57.5,7outeiro alto e debaixo de toda árvore frondosa te deitaste, fazendo-te prostituta. 21 Todavia, eu te *Êx 15.17;Sl 44.2;80.8;Is 5.2plantei como uma vide escolhida, toda semente da verdade; como, pois, te tornaste para mim *Is 5.4numa planta degenerada de vida estranha? 22 Embora *Jr 14.4te laves com salitre e uses muito sabão, contudo, a tua iniquidade fica registrada diante de mim, diz o Senhor Jeová. 23 *Pv 30.12Como podes dizer: Não estou manchada, não tenho andado após os *Jr 9.14Baalins? Vê o teu caminho *Jr 7.31no vale, conhece o que tens feito; és como dromedária ligeira, que anda *Jr 2.33,36;Jr 31.22torcendo os seus caminhos, 24 como *Jr 14.6asna silvestre, acostumada ao deserto, que sorve o vento na sua paixão; quem a pode impedir de satisfazer o seu desejo? Todos os que a buscarem não se fatigarão; no mês dela, achá-la-ão. 25 Guarda o teu pé da nudez e a tua garganta, da sede. Mas tu disseste: *Jr 18.12Não há esperança, não; porque *Jr 14.10;Dt 32.16amei os estranhos e após eles andarei.

26 Como *Jr 48.27o ladrão fica envergonhado quando o apanham, assim ficam envergonhados os da casa de Israel, eles, os seus reis, os seus príncipes, os seus sacerdotes e os seus profetas. 27 Eles dizem a um *Jr 3.9;10.8pau: Tu és meu pai; e a uma pedra: Tu me deste à luz. Pois me voltaram *Jr 18.17;32.33as costas e não o rosto; porém, *Jr 22.23;Is 26.16no tempo da sua tribulação, dirão: Levanta-te e salva-nos. 28 Mas onde estão os teus *Jr 1.16;Dt 32.37;Is 45.20deuses, que fizeste para ti? Levantem-se eles se te podem *Jr 11.12-13salvar no tempo da tua tribulação; pois os teus deuses, ó Judá, são tantos em número *Jr 11.13;2Rs 17.30-31como as tuas cidades.

A confiança própria do povo é vã

29 Por que quereis contender comigo? *Jr 5.1;6.13;Dn 9.11Todos vós transgredistes contra mim, diz Jeová. 30 *Jr 5.3;7.28;Is 1.5Em vão castiguei vossos filhos; eles não receberam a correção; *Jr 26.20-24;Ne 9.26a vossa espada devorou os vossos profetas, como um leão destruidor. 31 Ó geração! Vede vós a palavra de Jeová. Porventura, tenho eu sido para Israel um deserto? Ou uma terra de *Is 45.19escuridão? Por que, pois, diz o meu povo: *Jr 2.20,25;Dt 32.15Andamos à vontade, não tornaremos mais para ti? 32 Pode, porventura, a donzela esquecer-se dos seus adornos, ou a noiva, do seu cinto? Mas o meu povo *Jr 3.21;13.25;Is 17.10;Os 8.14esqueceu-se de mim por dias que não têm número. 33 Como *Jr 2.23diriges bem o teu caminho, para buscares o amor! Pois até às mulheres perdidas lhes ensinaste os teus caminhos. 34 Também nas orlas dos teus vestidos se achou o *Jr 7.6;19.4;2Rs 21.16;24.4sangue das almas dos inocentes pobres; não no lugar *Êx 22.2do arrombamento o achei, mas sobre todos estes vestidos. 35 Contudo, disseste: *Jr 2.23Eu sou inocente; certamente, a sua ira já se desviou de mim. Eis que eu *Jr 25.31entrarei em juízo contigo, porque *Pv 28.13;1Jo 1.8,10dizes: Não tenho pecado. 36 Por que *Jr 2.23;Os 12.1te apressas tanto a mudar o teu caminho? Também do *Jr 2.18;37.7;Is 30.3Egito serás envergonhada, como já foste envergonhada da *2Cr 28.16,20-21Assíria. 37 Também dele sairás *Jr 14.3-4;2Sm 13.19com as mãos sobre a cabeça, porque Jeová rejeitou *Jr 17.5;37.7-10as tuas confianças, e não serás bem sucedido nelas.

1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.*2.2 thee: or, for thy sake 3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD. 4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? 6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? 7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.*2.7 a plentiful…: or, the land of Carmel 8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I plead. 10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.*2.10 over: or, over to 11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?*2.14 spoiled: Heb. become a spoil? 15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.*2.15 yelled: Heb. gave out their voice 16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.*2.16 have…: or, feed on thy crown 17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? 18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? 19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.*2.20 transgress: or, serve 21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? 22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD. 23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;*2.23 thou art…: or, O swift dromedary 24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.*2.24 A wild…: or, O wild ass, etc*2.24 used: Heb. taught*2.24 her pleasure: Heb. the desire of her heart*2.24 turn…: or, reverse it? 25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.*2.25 There…: or, Is the case desperate? 26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, 27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.*2.27 brought…: or, begotten me*2.27 their back: Heb. the hinder part of the neck 28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.*2.28 trouble: Heb. evil

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. 30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?*2.31 We are…: Heb. We have dominion 32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. 34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.*2.34 secret…: Heb. digging 35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. 36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. 37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
