1 Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me.

Fight against those who fight against me.

2 Take hold of shield and buckler,

and stand up for my help.

3 Brandish the spear and block those who pursue me.

Tell my soul, "I am your salvation."

4 Let those who seek after my soul be disappointed and brought to dishonor.

Let those who plot my ruin be turned back and confounded.

5 Let them be as chaff before the wind,

The LORD’s angel driving them on.

6 Let their way be dark and slippery,

The LORD’s angel pursuing them.

7 For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me.

Without cause they have dug a pit for my soul.

8 Let destruction come on him unawares.

Let his net that he has hidden catch himself.

Let him fall into that destruction.

9 My soul shall be joyful in the LORD.

It shall rejoice in his salvation.

10 All my bones shall say, "LORD, who is like you,

who delivers the poor from him who is too strong for him;

yes, the poor and the needy from him who robs him?"

11 Unrighteous witnesses rise up.

They ask me about things that I don’t know about.

12 They reward me evil for good,

to the bereaving of my soul.

13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth.

I afflicted my soul with fasting.

My prayer returned into my own bosom.

14 I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother.

I bowed down mourning, as one who mourns his mother.

15 But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together.

The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it.

They tore at me, and didn’t cease.

16 Like the profane mockers in feasts,

they gnashed their teeth at me.

17 Lord, how long will you look on?

Rescue my soul from their destruction,

my precious life from the lions.

18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly.

I will praise you among many people.

19 Don’t let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me;

neither let those who hate me without a cause wink their eyes.

20 For they don’t speak peace,

but they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.

21 Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me.

They said, "Aha! Aha! Our eye has seen it!"

22 You have seen it, LORD. Don’t keep silent.

Lord, don’t be far from me.

23 Wake up! Rise up to defend me, my God!

My Lord, contend for me!

24 Vindicate me, LORD my God, according to your righteousness.

Don’t let them gloat over me.

25 Don’t let them say in their heart, "Aha! That’s the way we want it!"

Don’t let them say, "We have swallowed him up!"

26 Let them be disappointed and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity.

Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me.

27 Let those who favor my righteous cause shout for joy and be glad.

Yes, let them say continually, "May The LORD be magnified,

who has pleasure in the prosperity of his servant!"

28 My tongue shall talk about your righteousness and about your praise all day long.

2 Com as tuas armas, protege-me,

3 levanta-te e esbarra o caminho aos meus perseguidores. Repete-me, para eu ficar descansado,que és a minha salvação.

4 Lança a confusão e a vergonha no meio dos que procuram matar-me; que recuem, dêem meia-voltae que sejam derrotados os que me querem mal.

5 Sopra neles como o vento na palha,que um anjo de Deus os faça fugir.

6 Que para eles o caminho da vida se torne escuro e traiçoeiro,e que o anjo do Senhor os persiga.

7 Porque, sem eu lhes ter feito mal algum,prepararam-me uma armadilha,cavaram um fosso no meu caminho,para me apanharem.

8 Que sejam pois destruídos, inesperadamente, e apanhados na própria rede que esconderam para mim, presos na mesma armadilha com que queriam liquidar-me.

9 E eu me alegrarei intensamente no Senhore na libertação que me trará.

10 Todo o meu ser louvará o Senhor dizendo: Quem é que existe, igual a ti,que livras efectivamente o pobredaquele que o oprime por ser mais forte que ele, sim, o pobre e o necessitado daquele que os rouba.

11 Levantaram-se contra mim falsas testemunhas, que me acusaram de coisasde que eu até nunca tinha ouvido falar antes.

12 Pagaram-me com o mal, o bem que lhes fiz; queriam lançar-me à morte.

13 E contudo, quando estavam doentes,eu punha-me triste, por causa deles, o meu espírito sentia-se abatido,e recusava comer, e estava sempre, no meu íntimo, fazendo oração a Deus.

14 Estava em cuidados como se se tratasse do meu próprio irmão,do meu melhor amigo, que estivesse às portas da morte; andava abatido e lamentava-mecomo se fosse a minha mãe que estivesse a sofrer.

15 E agora, que estou em dificuldades,põem-se todos contentes; e reúnem-se, esses miseráveis,reúnem-se para juntarem as suas forças contra mim, e eu sem saber de nada; rasgavam já, antecipadamente e sem descanso,a minha vida.

16 Quando havia festas, juntavam-se,cheios de hipocrisia e de desprezo,rangendo os dentes de raiva contra mim.

17 Senhor, até quando verás isto, sem fazer nada? Liberta a minha alma dos seus ataques. Eu só tenho uma vida, e estes, como leões, querem destruí-la.

18 Eu te agradecerei publicamente,perante todo o ajuntamento do teu povo; na frente da multidão hei-de falar sobre toda a tua grandeza.

19 Não têm razão, esses que se alegrampensando no mal que me farão, nem esses que se piscam os olhos astuciosamente, uns aos outros,satisfeitos com os prejuízos que me darão injustamente.

20 São pessoas que nem sabem falar de coisas pacíficas, só andam é a tramar a vida das pessoas sossegadas e boas.

21 Bradam que me têm visto fazendo o mal,e dizem: Ah! Ah! Vimo-lo com os nossos próprios olhos.

22 Mas tu, Senhor, sabes tudo; não te cales, não me desampares.

23 Levanta-te para julgares sobre este assunto na minha vida,Senhor meu Deus, e para defenderes a minha causa.

24 Julga-me segundo a tua justiça, Senhor Deus meu,e não deixes que fiquem felizes com as minhas dificuldades.

25 Não os deixes dizerem:Ah! Em breve, seremos satisfeitos, e havemos de o apanhar.

26 Que sejam eles, sim, a ficar mal e envergonhados, todos juntos,esses que se regozijam com as minhas dificuldades; que sejam apanhados na confusão,esses que querem subir na vida à minha custa.

27 Mas que tenham grandes alegrias os que desejam o meu bem,e que nunca deixem de cantar a Deus dizendo: Grande é o Senhorque tem prazer em ver prosperar os que o servem.

28 E assim todo o diaeu te louvarei por causa da tua justiça.
