1 [To the chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.] Hear this, all ye peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world:

2 Both men of low and men of high degree, rich and poor alike.

3 My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding:

4 I will incline mine ear to a parable, I will open my riddle upon the harp.

5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of adversity, {when} the iniquity of my supplanters encompasseth me? -

6 They depend upon their wealth, and boast themselves in the abundance of their riches. ...

7 None can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him,

8 (For the redemption of their soul is costly, and must be given up for ever,)

9 That he should still live perpetually, {and} not see corruption.

10 For he seeth that wise men die; all alike, the fool and the brutish perish, and they leave their wealth to others.

11 Their inward thought is, that their houses are for ever, their dwelling-places from generation to generation: they call the lands after their own names.

12 Nevertheless, man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

13 This their way is their folly, yet they that come after them delight in their sayings. Selah.

14 Like sheep are they laid in Sheol: Death feedeth on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their comeliness shall be for Sheol to consume, that there be no habitation for them.

15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol: for he will receive me. Selah.

16 Be not afraid when a man becometh rich, when the glory of his house is increased:

17 For when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him.

18 Though he blessed his soul in his lifetime, -and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thyself, -

19 It shall go to the generation of his fathers: they shall never see light.

20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

1 Psaume des enfants de Coré, au maître chantre. Vous tous peuples, entendez ceci; vous habitants du monde, prêtez l'oreille.

2 Que ceux du bas état, et ceux qui sont d'une condition élevée écoutent; pareillement le riche et le pauvre.

3 Ma bouche prononcera des discours pleins de sagesse, et ce que mon cœur a médité sont des choses pleines de sens.

4 Je prêterai l'oreille à un propos sentencieux, j'exposerai mes dits notables sur le violon.

5 Pourquoi craindrai-je au mauvais temps, quand l'iniquité de mes talons m'environnera?

6 Il y en a qui se fient en leurs biens, et qui se glorifient en l'abondance de leurs richesses.

7 Personne ne pourra avec ses richesses racheter son frère, ni donner à Dieu sa rançon.

8 Car le rachat de leur âme est trop considérable, et il ne se fera jamais;

9 Pour faire qu'il vive encore à jamais et qu'il ne voie point la fosse.

10 Car on voit que les sages meurent, et pareillement que le fol et l'abruti périssent, et qu'ils laissent leurs biens à d'autres.

11 Leur intention est que leurs maisons durent à toujours, et que leurs habitations demeurent d'âge en âge; ils ont appelé les terres de leur nom;

12 Et toutefois l'homme ne se maintient point dans ses honneurs, [mais] il est rendu semblable aux bêtes brutes qui périssent [entièrement].

13 Ce chemin qu'ils tiennent, leur tourne à folie, [et néanmoins] leurs successeurs prennent plaisir à leurs enseignements; Sélah.

14 Ils seront mis au sépulcre comme des brebis; la mort se repaîtra d'eux, et les hommes droits auront domination sur eux au matin, et leur force sera le sépulcre pour les y faire consumer, chacun d'eux étant transporté hors de son domicile.

15 Mais Dieu rachètera mon âme de la puissance du sépulcre, quand il me prendra à soi; Sélah.

16 Ne crains point quand tu verras quelqu'un enrichi, [et] quand la gloire de sa maison sera multipliée.

17 Car lorsqu'il mourra, il n'emportera rien; sa gloire ne descendra point après lui.

18 Quoiqu'il ait béni son âme en sa vie, et quoiqu'on te loue parce que tu te seras fait du bien;

19 Venant jusques à la race des pères de chacun d'eux, [ce sera comme] s'ils n'avaient jamais vu la lumière.

20 L'homme qui est en honneur, [et] n'a point d'intelligence, est semblable aux bêtes brutes qui périssent [entièrement]
