1 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good,
for his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed by Yahweh say so,
whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
3 and gathered out of the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way.
They found no city to live in.
5 Hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 He led them also by a straight way,
that they might go to a city to live in.
8 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
9 For he satisfies the longing soul.
He fills the hungry soul with good.
10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
being bound in affliction and iron,
11 because they rebelled against the words of God,
and condemned the counsel of the Most High.
12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labor.
They fell down, and there was no one to help.
13 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
and broke away their chains.
15 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
16 For he has broken the gates of bronze,
and cut through bars of iron.
17 Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience,
and because of their iniquities.
18 Their soul abhors all kinds of food.
They draw near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he saves them out of their distresses.
20 He sends his word, and heals them,
and delivers them from their graves.
21 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
22 Let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and declare his deeds with singing.
23 Those who go down to the sea in ships,
who do business in great waters,
24 these see Yahweh’s deeds,
and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commands, and raises the stormy wind,
which lifts up its waves.
26 They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths.
Their soul melts away because of trouble.
27 They reel back and forth, and stagger like a drunken man,
and are at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he brings them out of their distress.
29 He makes the storm a calm,
so that its waves are still.
30 Then they are glad because it is calm,
so he brings them to their desired haven.
31 Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!
32 Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people,
and praise him in the seat of the elders.
33 He turns rivers into a desert,
water springs into a thirsty ground,
34 and a fruitful land into a salt waste,
for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 He turns a desert into a pool of water,
and a dry land into water springs.
36 There he makes the hungry live,
that they may prepare a city to live in,
37 sow fields, plant vineyards,
and reap the fruits of increase.
38 He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly.
He doesn’t allow their livestock to decrease.
39 Again, they are diminished and bowed down
through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.
40 He pours contempt on princes,
and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.
41 Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction,
and increases their families like a flock.
42 The upright will see it, and be glad.
All the wicked will shut their mouths.
43 Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things.
They will consider the loving kindnesses of Yahweh.
1 Célébrez l'Eternel, car il est bon, parce que sa bonté demeure à toujours.
2 Que ceux-là le disent, qui sont les rachetés de l'Eternel, lesquels il a rachetés de la main de l'oppresseur;
3 Et ceux aussi qu'il a ramassés des pays d'Orient et d'Occident, d'Aquilon et de Midi.
4 Ils étaient errants par le désert, en un chemin solitaire, [et] ils ne trouvaient aucune ville habitée.
5 Ils étaient affamés et altérés, l'âme leur défaillait.
6 Alors ils ont crié vers l'Eternel dans leur détresse; il les a délivrés de leurs angoisses,
7 Et les a conduits au droit chemin pour aller en une ville habitée.
8 Qu'ils célèbrent envers l'Eternel sa gratuité, et ses merveilles envers les fils des hommes :
9 Parce qu'il a désaltéré l'âme altérée, et rassasié de ses biens l'âme affamée.
10 Ceux qui demeurent dans les ténèbres, et dans l'ombre de la mort, garrottés d'affliction et de fer;
11 Parce qu'ils ont été rebelles aux paroles du [Dieu] Fort, et qu'ils ont rejeté par mépris le conseil du Souverain;
12 Et il a humilié leur cœur par le travail, [et] ils ont été abattus, sans qu'il y eût personne qui les aidât.
13 Alors ils ont crié vers l'Eternel en leur détresse, [et] il les a délivrés de leurs angoisses.
14 Il les a tirés hors des ténèbres, et de l'ombre de la mort, et il a rompu leurs liens.
15 Qu'ils célèbrent envers l'Eternel sa gratuité, et ses merveilles envers les fils des hommes.
16 Parce qu'il a brisé les portes d'airain, et cassé les barreaux de fer.
17 Les fols qui sont affligés à cause de leur transgression, et à cause de leurs iniquités;
18 Leur âme a en horreur toute viande, et ils touchent aux portes de la mort.
19 Alors ils ont crié vers l'Eternel dans leur détresse, [et] il les a délivrés de leurs angoisses.
20 Il envoie sa parole, et les guérit, et il [les] délivre de leurs tombeaux.
21 Qu'ils célèbrent envers l'Eternel sa gratuité, et ses merveilles envers les fils des hommes.
22 Et qu'ils sacrifient des sacrifices d'actions de grâces, et qu'ils racontent ses œuvres en chantant de joie.
23 Ceux qui descendent sur la mer dans des navires, faisant commerce parmi les grandes eaux,
24 Qui voient les œuvres de l'Eternel, et ses merveilles dans les lieux profonds,
25 (Car il commande, et fait comparaître le vent de tempête, qui élève les vagues de la mer.)
26 Ils montent aux cieux, ils descendent aux abîmes; leur âme se fond d'angoisse.
27 Ils branlent, et chancellent comme un homme ivre, et toute leur sagesse leur manque.
28 Alors ils crient vers l'Eternel dans leur détresse, et il les tire hors de leurs angoisses.
29 Il arrête la tourmente, [la changeant] en calme, et les ondes sont calmes.
30 Puis ils se réjouissent de ce qu'elles sont apaisées, et il les conduit au port qu'ils désiraient.
31 Qu'ils célèbrent envers l'Eternel sa gratuité, et ses merveilles envers les fils des hommes;
32 Et qu'ils l'exaltent dans la congrégation du peuple, et le louent dans l'assemblée des Anciens.
33 Il réduit les fleuves en désert, et les sources d'eaux en sécheresse;
34 Et la terre fertile en terre salée, à cause de la malice de ceux qui y habitent.
35 Il réduit le désert en des étangs d'eaux, et la terre sèche en des sources d'eaux;
36 Et il y fait habiter ceux qui étaient affamés, tellement qu'ils y bâtissent des villes habitables.
37 Et sèment les champs, et plantent des vignes qui rendent du fruit tous les ans.
38 Il les bénit, et ils sont fort multipliés, et il ne laisse point diminuer leur bétail.
39 Puis ils se diminuent, et sont humiliés par l'oppression, le mal, et l'ennui.
40 Il répand le mépris sur les principaux, et les fait errer par des lieux hideux, où il n'y a point de chemin.
41 Mais il tire le pauvre hors de l'affliction, et donne les familles comme par troupeaux.
42 Les hommes droits voient cela, et s'en réjouissent; mais toute iniquité a la bouche fermée.
43 Quiconque est sage, prendra garde à ces choses, afin qu'on considère les bontés de l'Eternel.
