1 To the chief music-maker. Of the servant of the Lord, of David, who said the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord made him free from the hand of all his haters, and from the hand of Saul; and he said,
2 \18:1\I will give you my love, O Lord, my strength.
3 \18:2\The Lord is my Rock, my walled town, and my saviour; my God, my Rock, in him will I put my faith; my breastplate, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
4 \18:3\I will send up my cry to the Lord, who is to be praised; so will I be made safe from those who are against me.
5 \18:4\The cords of death were round me, and the seas of evil put me in fear.
6 \18:5\The cords of hell were round me: the nets of death came on me.
7 \18:6\In my trouble my voice went up to the Lord, and my cry to my God: my voice came to his hearing in his holy Temple, and my prayer came before him, even into his ears.
8 \18:7\Then trouble and shock came on the earth; and the bases of the mountains were moved and shaking, because he was angry.
9 \18:8\There went up a smoke from his nose, and a fire of destruction from his mouth: flames were lighted by it.
10 \18:9\The heavens were bent, so that he might come down; and it was dark under his feet.
11 \18:10\And he went in flight through the air, seated on a storm-cloud: going quickly on the wings of the wind.
12 \18:11\He made the dark his secret place; his tent round him was the dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
13 \18:12\Before his shining light his dark clouds went past, raining ice and fire.
14 \18:13\The Lord made thunder in the heavens, and the voice of the Highest was sounding out: a rain of ice and fire.
15 \18:14\He sent out his arrows, driving them in all directions; by his flames of fire they were troubled.
16 \18:15\Then the deep beds of the waters were seen, and the bases of the world were uncovered, because of your words of wrath, O Lord, because of the breath from your mouth.
17 \18:16\He sent from on high, he took me, pulling me out of great waters.
18 \18:17\He made me free from my strong hater, and from those who were against me, because they were stronger than I.
19 \18:18\They came on me in the day of my trouble; but the Lord was my support.
20 \18:19\He took me out into a wide place; he was my saviour because he had delight in me.
21 \18:20\The Lord gives me the reward of my righteousness, because my hands are clean before him.
22 \18:21\For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not been turned away in sin from my God.
23 \18:22\For all his decisions were before me, and I did not put away his laws from me.
24 \18:23\And I was upright before him, and I kept myself from sin.
25 \18:24\Because of this the Lord has given me the reward of my righteousness, because my hands are clean in his eyes.
26 \18:25\On him who has mercy you will have mercy; to the upright you will be upright;
27 \18:26\He who is holy will see that you are holy; but to the man whose way is not straight you will be a hard judge.
28 \18:27\For you are the saviour of those who are in trouble; but eyes full of pride will be made low.
29 \18:28\You, O Lord, will be my light; by you, my God, the dark will be made bright for me.
30 \18:29\By your help I have made a way through the wall which was shutting me in; by the help of my God I have gone over a wall.
31 \18:30\As for God, his way is completely good; the word of the Lord is tested; he is a breastplate for all those who put their faith in him.
32 \18:31\For who is God but the Lord? or who is a Rock but our God?
33 \18:32\God puts a strong band about me, guiding me in a straight way.
34 \18:33\He makes my feet like roes' feet, and puts me on high places.
35 \18:34\He makes my hands expert in war, so that a bow of brass is bent by my arms.
36 \18:35\You have given me the breastplate of your salvation: your right hand has been my support, and your mercy has made me great.
37 \18:36\You have made my steps wide under me, so that my feet are kept from slipping.
38 \18:37\I go after my haters and overtake them; not turning back till they are all overcome.
39 \18:38\I will give them wounds, so that they are not able to get up: they are stretched under my feet.
40 \18:39\For I have been armed by you with strength for the fight: you have made low under me those who come out against me.
41 \18:40\By you their backs are turned in flight, so that my haters are cut off.
42 \18:41\They were crying out, but there was no one to come to their help: even to the Lord, but he gave them no answer.
43 \18:42\Then they were crushed as small as dust before the wind; they were drained out like the waste of the streets.
44 \18:43\You have made me free from the fightings of the people; you have made me the head of the nations: a people of whom I had no knowledge will be my servants.
45 \18:44\From the time when my name comes to their ears they will be ruled by me: men of other countries will, with false hearts, put themselves under my authority.
46 \18:45\They will be wasting away, they will come out of their secret places shaking with fear.
47 \18:46\The Lord is living; praise be to my Rock, and let the God of my salvation be honoured.
48 \18:47\It is God who sends punishment on my haters, and puts peoples under my rule.
49 \18:48\He makes me free from my haters; I am lifted up over those who come up against me: you have made me free from the violent man.
50 \18:49\Because of this I will give you praise, O Lord, among the nations, and will make a song of praise to your name.
51 \18:50\Great salvation does he give to his king; he has mercy on the king of his selection, David, and on his seed for ever.
1 Au maître-chantre. Psaume de David, serviteur de l'Éternel, qui adressa à l'Éternel les paroles de ce cantique, lorsque l'Éternel l'eut délivré de la main de tous ses ennemis et de la main de Saül. (18-2) Il dit donc: Je t'aimerai, ô Éternel, qui es ma force!
2 L'Éternel est mon rocher, ma forteresse et mon libérateur! Mon Dieu est mon rocher, en qui je me confie! Mon bouclier, la force de mon salut, ma haute retraite!
3 Je m'écrie: Loué soit l'Éternel! et je suis délivré de mes ennemis.
4 Les liens de la mort m'avaient enveloppé, et des torrents de méchants m'avaient épouvanté;
5 Les liens du Sépulcre m'entouraient, les pièges de la mort m'avaient surpris;
6 Dans ma détresse, j'invoquai l'Éternel, et je criai à mon Dieu. De son palais, il entendit ma voix, et les cris que je poussais vers lui parvinrent à ses oreilles.
7 Alors la terre fut ébranlée et trembla; les fondements des montagnes s'agitèrent et s'ébranlèrent, parce qu'il était irrité.
8 Une fumée montait de ses narines, et de sa bouche un feu dévorant; il en jaillissait des charbons embrasés.
9 Il abaissa les cieux et descendit, ayant l'obscurité sous ses pieds.
10 Il était monté sur un Voyant, et il volait; il était porté sur les ailes du vent.
11 Il fit des ténèbres sa retraite; il mit autour de lui, comme une tente, des eaux ténébreuses, d'épaisses nuées du ciel.
12 De la splendeur qui était devant lui, s'échappaient des nuées, avec de la grêle et des charbons de feu.
13 Et l'Éternel tonna dans les cieux, le Très-Haut fit retentir sa voix, avec de la grêle et des charbons de feu.
14 Il lança ses flèches, et dispersa mes ennemis; il lança des éclairs nombreux, et les mit en déroute.
15 Alors le fond des eaux apparut, et les fondements du monde furent mis à découvert, au bruit de ta menace, ô Éternel, au souffle du vent de tes narines.
16 Il étendit sa main d'en haut, et me prit; il me tira des grosses eaux.
17 Il me délivra de mon ennemi puissant, et de mes adversaires qui étaient plus forts que moi.
18 Ils m'avaient surpris au jour de ma calamité; mais l'Éternel fut mon appui.
19 Il m'a mis au large, il m'a délivré, parce qu'il a pris son plaisir en moi.
20 L'Éternel m'a traité selon ma justice; il m'a rendu selon la pureté de mes mains.
21 Car j'ai gardé les voies de l'Éternel, et je n'ai point été infidèle à mon Dieu.
22 Car toutes ses ordonnances sont devant moi, et je ne m'écarte point de ses principes.
23 J'ai été intègre avec lui, et je me suis gardé de mon péché.
24 Aussi l'Éternel m'a rendu selon ma justice, selon la pureté de mes mains devant ses yeux.
25 Avec celui qui est bon, tu es bon; avec l'homme intègre, tu es intègre.
26 Avec celui qui est pur, tu te montres pur; mais avec le pervers, tu agis selon sa perversité.
27 Car c'est toi qui sauves le peuple affligé, et qui abaisses les yeux des superbes.
28 C'est toi qui fais luire ma lampe; c'est l'Éternel mon Dieu qui éclaire mes ténèbres.
29 Car avec toi je me jette sur une troupe; avec mon Dieu je franchis la muraille.
30 La voie de Dieu est parfaite; la Parole de l’Éternel est éprouvée; il est un bouclier pour tous ceux qui se retirent vers lui.
31 Car qui est Dieu, sinon l'Éternel? Et qui est un rocher, sinon notre Dieu?
32 Le Dieu qui me ceint de force, et qui a rendu mon chemin sûr;
33 Qui rend mes pieds semblables à ceux des biches, et il me fait tenir debout sur mes hauteurs;
34 Il dresse mes mains au combat, tellement que mes bras brisent un arc d'airain.
35 Tu m'as donné le bouclier de ton salut; ta droite me soutient, et ta bonté me rend puissant.
36 Tu élargis le chemin sous mes pas, et mes talons ne chancellent point.
37 Je poursuis mes ennemis; je les atteins, et je ne reviens qu'après les avoir exterminés.
38 Je les frappe, et ils ne peuvent se relever; ils tombent sous mes pieds.
39 Car tu m'as ceint de force pour le combat, tu fais plier sous moi mes adversaires.
40 Tu fais tourner le dos à mes ennemis devant moi; ceux qui me haïssaient, je les détruis.
41 Ils crient, mais il n'y a point de libérateur; ils crient à l'Éternel, mais il ne leur répond pas.
42 Je les broie comme la poussière livrée au vent, je les jette au loin comme la boue des rues.
43 Tu me sauves des dissensions du peuple; tu me mets à la tête des nations; le peuple que je ne connaissais pas m'est assujetti.
44 Au bruit de mon nom, ils m'obéissent; les fils de l'étranger se sont soumis à moi subtilement.
45 Les fils de l'étranger défaillent, et sortent tremblants de leur retraite.
46 L'Éternel est vivant! Et béni soit mon Rocher! Que le Dieu de mon salut soit exalté,
47 Le Dieu qui me donne la vengeance, et qui range les peuples sous moi!
48 Toi qui me délivres de mes ennemis, qui m'élèves au-dessus de mes adversaires, qui me délivres de l'homme violent!
49 C'est pourquoi je te louerai, ô Éternel, parmi les nations, et je chanterai des louanges à ton nom.
50 C'est lui qui délivre magnifiquement son roi, qui fait miséricorde à son Oint, à David et à sa postérité à jamais.
