FOURTH BOOK

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God#GodHebrew: Elohim

1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, and thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from eternity to eternity thou art ·God*GodHebrew: El3 Thou makest mortal man to return to dust, and sayest, Return, children of men. 4 For a thousand years, in thy sight, are as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass that groweth up: 6 In the morning it flourisheth and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down and withereth.

7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy fury are we troubled. 8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. 9 For all our days pass away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a passing thought. 10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if, by reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet their pride is labour and vanity, for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? and thy wrath according to the fear of thee?

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may acquire a wise heart. 13 Return, Jehovah: how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants. 14 Satisfy us early with thy loving-kindness; that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, according to the years wherein we have seen evil. 16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy majesty unto their sons. 17 And let the beauty of Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim be upon us; and establish thou the work of our hands upon us: yea, the work of our hands, establish thou it.

O rugăciune a lui Moise,

omul lui Dumnezeu

1 Doamne, Tu ai fost*Deut. 33:27.Ezec. 11:16. locul nostru de adăpost

din neam în neam.

2 Înainte*Prov. 8:25,26. ca să se fi născut munții

și înainte ca să se fi făcut pământul și lumea,

din veșnicie în veșnicie, Tu ești Dumnezeu!

3 Tu întorci pe oameni în țărână

și zici: „Întoarceți-vă*Gen. 3:19.Ecl. 12:7., fiii oamenilor!"

4 Căci*2 Pet. 3:8. înaintea Ta, o mie de ani

sunt ca ziua de ieri, care a trecut,

și ca o strajă din noapte.

5 Îi mături ca un*Ps. 73:20. vis:

dimineața sunt*Ps. 103:15.Is. 40:6. ca iarba, care încolțește iarăși:

6 înflorește dimineața*Iov 14:2.Ps. 92:7. și crește,

iar seara este tăiată și se usucă.

7 Noi suntem mistuiți de mânia Ta

și îngroziți de urgia Ta.

8 Tu pui*Ps. 50:21.Ier. 16:17. înaintea Ta nelegiuirile noastre

și scoți la lumina Feței Tale păcatele noastre cele*Ps. 19:12. ascunse.

9 Toate zilele noastre pier de urgia Ta,

vedem cum ni se duc anii ca un sunet.

10 Anii vieții noastre se ridică la șaptezeci de ani,

iar, pentru cei mai tari, la optzeci de ani;

și lucrul cu care se mândrește omul în timpul lor nu este decât trudă și durere,

căci trec iute, și noi zburăm.

11 Dar cine ia seama la tăria mâniei Tale

și la urgia Ta, așa cum se cuvine să se teamă de Tine?

12 Învață-ne*Ps. 39:4. să ne numărăm bine zilele,

ca să căpătăm o inimă înțeleaptă!

13 Întoarce-te, Doamne! Până când zăbovești?

Ai*Deut. 32:36.Ps. 135:14. milă de robii Tăi!

14 Satură-ne în fiecare dimineață de bunătatea Ta

și*Ps. 85:6;149:4. toată viața noastră ne vom bucura și ne vom veseli!

15 Înveselește-ne tot atâtea zile câte ne-ai smerit,

tot atâția ani câți am văzut nenorocirea!

16 Să se arate robilor Tăi lucrarea*Hab. 3:2. Ta

și slava Ta fiilor lor!

17 Fie peste noi bunăvoința*Ps. 27:4. Domnului Dumnezeului nostru!

Și întărește*Is. 26:12. lucrarea mâinilor noastre,

da, întărește lucrarea mâinilor noastre!
