| 3 | Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. | A miket hallottunk és tudunk; és a miket atyáink beszéltek nékünk, |
| 4 | We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. | Nem titkoljuk el azokat az õ fiaiktól; a jövõ nemzedéknek is elbeszéljük az Úr dicséretét, hatalmát és csodáit, a melyeket cselekedett. |
| 5 | For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: | Mert bizonyságot állított Jákóbban, és törvényt rendelt Izráelben; a melyek felõl megparancsolta atyáinknak, hogy megtanítsák azokra fiaikat; |
| 6 | That the generation to come might know them, even the children who should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: | Hogy megtudja [azokat] a jövõ nemzedék, a fiak, a kik születnek; és felkeljenek és hirdessék [azokat] fiaiknak; |
| 7 | That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: | Hogy Istenbe vessék reménységüket és el ne felejtkezzenek Isten dolgairól, hanem az õ parancsolatait megtartsák. |
| 8 | And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God. | Hogy ne legyenek olyanok, mint apáik: szilaj és makacs nemzedék, olyan nemzedék, a melynek szíve nem volt szilárd, és lelke sem volt hû Isten iránt. |
| 9 | The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. | Efraim fiai, a fegyveres íjászok hátat fordítottak az ütközet napján; |
| 10 | They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; | Nem õrizték meg az Isten szövetségét, és nem akartak járni az õ törvényében; |
| 11 | And forgot his works, and his wonders that he had shown them. | Sõt elfelejtkeztek az õ tetteirõl, csodáiról, a melyeket mutatott nékik. |
| 12 mapa | Marvelous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. | Apáik elõtt csodát mívelt Égyiptom földjén, a Czoán mezején. |
| 13 | He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as a heap. | Ketté választotta a tengert s átvitte õket; és felállította a vizeket fal gyanánt. |
| 14 | In the day-time also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. | Vezette õket nappal felhõben, és egész éjen át tûznek világosságában. |
| 15 | He cleaved the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. | Sziklákat hasított meg a pusztában, és inniok adott bõségesen, akárcsak a mélységes vizekbõl. |
| 16 | He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. | Patakokat fakasztott a kõsziklából, és folyamok módjára vizeket ömlesztett: |
| 17 | And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the Most High in the wilderness. | Mégis folyvást vétkeztek ellene, és haragították a Felségest a pusztában; |
| 18 | And they tempted God in their heart by asking food for their desire. | És megkísérték Istent az õ szívökben, enni valót kérvén az õ kivánságuk szerint. |
| 19 | Yes, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? | És szólának Isten ellen, mondván: Avagy tudna-é Isten asztalt teríteni a pusztában? |
| 20 | Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people? | Ímé, megcsapta a kõsziklát és víz ömlött és patakok özönlöttek; de vajjon tud-é kenyeret is adni? avagy készíthet-é húst az õ népének? |
| 21 | Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel; | Meghallotta az Úr és megharagudott ezért, és tûz gyulladt fel Jákób ellen, és harag gerjedt fel Izráel ellen; |
| 22 | Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation: | Mert nem hittek Istenben, és nem bíztak az õ segedelmében, |
| 23 | Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, | És ráparancsolt a felhõkre ott fenn, és az egek ajtait megnyitotta. |
| 24 | And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. | És hullatott reájuk mannát eledelül, és mennyei gabonát adott nékik. |
| 25 | Man ate angels' food: he sent them food to the full. | Angyalok kenyerét ette az ember, bõséggel vetett nékik eleséget, |
| 26 | He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind. | Megindítá a keleti szelet az egekben, és elhozá erejével a déli szelet; |
| 27 | He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea: | És hullata rájuk annyi húst, mint a por, és annyi madarat, mint a tenger fövénye. |
| 28 | And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, around their habitations. | És leszállítá azokat az õ táboruk közepére, az õ sátoraikhoz köröskörül. |
| 29 | So they ate, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire; | Evének azért és igen megelégedének, és a mit kivántak, azt hozá nékik. |
| 30 | They were not estranged from their desire: but while their meat was yet in their mouths, | Még fel sem hagytak a kivánságukkal; az étel még a szájukban vala: |
| 31 | The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel. | Mikor az Isten haragja felgerjede ellenök, és fõbbjeik közül [sokakat] megöle, és Izráelnek ifjait levágá; |
| 32 | For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. | Mindamellett is újra vétkezének, és nem hivének az õ csodadolgaiban. |
| 33 | Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. | Azért hiábavalóságban töltette el napjaikat, éveiket pedig rettegésben. |
| 34 | When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God. | Ha ölte õket, hozzá fordultak, megtértek és Istent keresék. |
| 35 | And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer. | És eszökbe vevék, hogy Isten az õ sziklájok, és a felséges Isten az õ megváltójok; |
| 36 | Nevertheless they flattered him with their mouth, and they lied to him with their tongues. | És hízelkedének néki szájokkal, nyelvökkel pedig hazudozának néki. |
| 37 | For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant. | De szívök nem volt tökéletes iránta, és nem voltak hûségesek az õ szövetségéhez; |
| 38 | But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yes, many a time he turned his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. | Õ azonban irgalmas és bûnbocsátó, nem semmisít meg, sõt sokszor elfordítja haragját, és nem önti ki teljes búsulását. |
| 39 | For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. | Azért eszébe vevé, hogy test õk, [és olyanok, mint] az ellebbenõ szél, a mely nem tér vissza. |
| 40 | How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! | Hányszor keserítették õt a pusztában, [hányszor] illették fájdalommal a kietlenben?! |
| 41 | Yes, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. | És újra kísértették az Istent, és ingerelték Izráel szentjét. |
| 42 | They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy. | Nem emlékeztek meg az õ kezérõl, [sem] a napról, a melyen megváltotta õket a nyomorgatótól; |
| 43 mapa | How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: | Midõn kitûzte jeleit Égyiptomban, és csodáit a Czoán mezején. |
| 44 | And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink. | És vérré változtatta folyóikat, hogy nem ihatták patakjaikat. |
| 45 | He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them. | Legyeket bocsáta reájok, a melyek emészték õket, és békát, a mely pusztítá õket. |
| 46 | He gave also their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust. | Odaadta termésöket a szöcskének, s munkájuk gyümölcsét a sáskának. |
| 47 | He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees with frost. | Jégesõvel pusztítá el szõlõjüket, s figefáikat kõesõvel. |
| 48 | He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. | Odaveté barmaikat a jégesõnek, marháikat pedig a mennyköveknek. |
| 49 | He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them. | Rájok bocsátá haragjának tüzét, mérgét, búsulását és a szorongatást: a gonosz angyalok seregét. |
| 50 | He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; | Utat tört haragjának, s nem tartotta meg a haláltól lelköket, és életöket döghalálnak veté. |
| 51 mapa | And smote all the first-born in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham: | És megöle minden elsõszülöttet Égyiptomban, az erõ zsengéjét Khám sátoraiban. |
| 52 | But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. | Elindítá mint juhokat, az õ népét, s vezeté õket, mint nyájat a pusztában. |
| 53 | And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. | És vezeté õket biztonságban, és nem félének, ellenségeiket pedig elborítá a tenger. |
| 54 | And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased. | És bevivé õket az õ szent határába, arra a hegyre, a melyet szerzett az õ jobbkezével. |
| 55 | He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. | És kiûzé elõlük a pogányokat, és elosztá nékik az örökséget sorsvetéssel; és letelepíté azok sátoraiban az Izráel törzseit. |
| 56 | Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies: | De megkisérték és megharagíták a magasságos Istent, és nem õrizék meg bizonyságait; |
| 57 | But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. | Elfordulának ugyanis és hûtlenek levének, mint apáik; visszafelé fordulának, mint a csalfa kézív. |
| 58 | For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. | Haragra ingerelték õt magaslataikkal, és bosszantották faragott bálványaikkal. |
| 59 | When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel: | Meghallá ezt Isten és felgerjede; és az Izráelt felette megútálá. |
| 60 mapa | So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men; | És elveté magától Silói hajlékát, a sátort, a melyben lakott vala az emberek között; |
| 61 | And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand. | Sõt fogságba viteté erejét, dicsõségét pedig ellenség kezébe. |
| 62 | He gave over his people also to the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance. | És fegyver alá rekeszté az õ népét; és az õ öröksége ellen felgerjede. |
| 63 | The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage. | Ifjait tûz emészté meg, és szüzei nem énekeltettek meg. |
| 64 | Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation. | Papjai fegyver miatt hullottak el, és özvegyei nem végezheték a siratást. |
| 65 | Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. | Akkor felserkene az Úr, mintegy álomból; mint hõs, a ki bortól vigadoz; |
| 66 | And he smote his enemies in the hinder part: he put them to a perpetual reproach. | És visszaveré ellenségeit; s örök gyalázatot vete reájok. |
| 67 | Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim: | Azután megútálá a József sátorát, és nem választá Efraim törzsét; |
| 68 mapa | But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved. | Hanem a Júda törzsét választá; a Sion hegyét, a melyet szeret. |
| 69 | And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever. | És megépíté szent helyét, mint egy magas [vár]at; mint a földet, a melyet örök idõre fundált. |
| 70 | He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheep-folds: | És kiválasztá Dávidot, az õ szolgáját, és elhozá õt a juhok aklaiból. |
| 71 | From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. | A szoptatós juhok mellõl hozá el õt, hogy legeltesse Jákóbot, az õ népét, és Izráelt, az õ örökségét. |
| 72 | So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands. | És legelteté õket szívének tökéletessége szerint, és vezeté õket bölcs kezeivel. |
