Cântico didático de Asafe.

1 Ó Deus, porque é que nos rejeitaste?

Terá sido para sempre?

Porque estás tão zangado com as tuas ovelhas?

2 Lembra-te deste teu povo

que resgataste em tempos tão antigos,

desta terra que tomaste para ti

e do monte Sião, onde tens habitado.

3 Levanta-te contra as constantes destruições

e contra todo o mal que o inimigo tem feito no teu santuário.

4 Aí mesmo, nos lugares santos,

os teus adversários erguem gritos de guerra

e bandeiras de combate.

5 São como os lenhadores,

avançando de machado em punho pela floresta,

desbastando à esquerda e à direita.

6 Partem e destroem tudo,

até as mais belas obras de talha.

7 Lançaram fogo ao teu santuário,

profanaram a morada do teu nome;

deitaram tudo abaixo.

8 Disseram nos seus corações:

"Apaguemos todos os vestígios de Deus,

de uma vez para sempre."

Queimaram os santos lugares

onde eras adorado na terra pelo povo.

9 Tudo o que nos marcava como teu povo desapareceu;

desapareceram os homens de Deus, os profetas,

e entre nós ninguém sabe até quando isto durará.

10 Sim, até quando, ó Deus, nos enxovalhará o inimigo?

Até quando deixarás que desonrem o teu nome?

11 Porque retrais a tua mão, sim, a tua mão direita?

Estende-a e fá-los desaparecerem.

12 Todavia, Deus é o meu Rei, desde os tempos antigos,

que salva pessoas em muitos lugares da Terra.

13 Com o teu poder abriste o mar

e esmagaste a cabeça dos grandes animais marinhos.

14 Fizeste em pedaços as cabeças do monstro marinho*74.14 Em hebraico, leviatan. Criatura de grandes dimensões, de identificação incerta, que tem sido caracterizada como dragão, serpente marinha ou polvo gigante.

e as deste como alimento aos nómadas do deserto.

15 Sob as tuas ordens brotaram fontes

e nasceram ribeiros para dar água ao teu povo.

Secaste rios caudalosos, como o Jordão,

para que passassem a seco para a outra margem.

16 O dia e a noite pertencem-te;

fizeste a Lua e o Sol.

17 Na Terra, tudo foi ordenado por ti;

estabeleceste tanto o verão como o inverno.

18 Assim, Senhor, vê como o inimigo te insultou;

uma gente louca e orgulhosa blasfemou do teu nome.

19 Não deixes os animais arrebatarem o teu povo,

como se fosse uma simples rola;

não o deixes assim neste estado de aflição.

20 Lembra-te da tua aliança,

pois nos lugares obscuros da terra

as pessoas planeiam cometer violência!

21 Que o oprimido não fique sem desforra;

que o aflito e o necessitado ainda tenham muitas razões

para louvarem o teu nome!

22 Levanta-te, ó Deus,

defende aquilo que afinal é a tua própria causa!

Lembra-te dos insultos que esta gente louca profere todo o dia.

23 Não te esqueças dos gritos de ódio dos teus inimigos;

a sua revolta vai aumentando cada vez mais contra ti.

2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.*74.2 rod: or, tribe

3 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.

4 Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.

5 A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.

6 But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.

7 They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.*74.7 They have cast…: Heb. They have sent thy sanctuary unto the fire

8 They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.*74.8 destroy: Heb. break

9 We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

11 Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.

12 For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.*74.13 divide: Heb. break*74.13 dragons: or, whales

14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

15 Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.*74.15 mighty…: Heb. rivers of strength

16 The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.

17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.*74.17 made: Heb. made them

18 Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.

19 O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.

20 Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.

21 O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.

22 Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.

23 Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.*74.23 increaseth: Heb. ascendeth
