He Whakatūpato ki ngā Rūpahu

He waiata; he pikitanga.

1 I tangi ahau ki a Ihowā i tōku matenga,

ā, i whakahoki kupu mai ia ki ahau:

2 "E Ihowā, whakaorangia tōku wairua

i te ngutu teka, i te arero hīanga."

3 Ko te aha e hoatu ki a koe?

Ko te aha hoki e tāpiritia atu māu,

e te arero hīanga?

4 Ko ngā pere koi a te hunga nunui,

me ngā waro hunipa.

5 Auē, tōku mate, tō te manene i Meheke,

tōku hoki e noho nei i ngā tēneti o Kerara.

6 Kua roa te nohoanga tahitanga o tōku wairua

ki te tangata e kino ana ki te āta noho.

7 Mō te āta noho ahau;

engari ka kōrero ahau,

ka anga rātou ka whawhai.

A Song of Ascents.

1 In my distress I cried unto Jehovah,

And he answered me.

2 Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips,

And from a deceitful tongue.

3 What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,

Thou deceitful tongue?

4 Sharp arrows of the mighty,

With coals of juniper.

5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech,

That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!

6 My soul hath long had her dwelling

With him that hateth peace.

7 I am for peace:

But when I speak, they are for war.
