Ko Ihowā te Kaitiaki o Tāna Iwi

1 Me kaua a Ihowā i a tātou

– he kī tēnei mā Īharaira –

2 me kaua a Ihowā i a tātou,

i te whakatikanga mai o te tangata ki a tātou;

3 pēnei kua horomia oratia tātou e rātou,

i te muranga o tō rātou riri ki a tātou.

4 Kua ngaro tātou i ngā wai,

kua taupokina ō tātou wairua e te ia;

5 pēnei kua taupokina ō tātou wairua

e ngā wai whakakake.

6 Kia whakapaingia a Ihowā,

kīhai nei i tuku i a tātou

hei ngaunga mā ō rātou niho.

7 Kua mawhiti ō tātou wairua,

me he manu i roto i te māhanga a ngā kaihopu;

kua motu te māhanga,

ā, mawhiti ana tātou.

8 Kei te ingoa o Ihowā he āwhina mō tātou,

kei te kaihanga i te rangi, i te whenua.

1 If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,

Let Israel now say,

2 If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,

When men rose up against us;

3 Then they had swallowed us up alive,

When their wrath was kindled against us:

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us,

The stream had gone over our soul;

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

6 Blessed be Jehovah,

Who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers:

The snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of Jehovah,

Who made heaven and earth.
